The Complete HVAC Air Filter Guide (MERV Ratings Explained)
Higher MERV isn't always better — it can actually reduce airflow and damage your system. Here's how to pick the right filter.
MERV Ratings Cheat Sheet
- MERV 1–4: Basic fiberglass — protects the equipment, not your lungs
- MERV 5–8: Standard pleated — the sweet spot for most homes
- MERV 9–12: Better allergen filtering — good for pet homes
- MERV 13–16: Hospital-grade — only for systems designed to handle them
- MERV 17+: HEPA — requires dedicated air handler
The Higher-MERV Mistake
Home HVAC systems are engineered for MERV 8–11 filters. Slapping a MERV 16 filter into a residential system restricts airflow, freezes the evaporator coil, and can burn out the blower motor in under a year.
Replacement Frequency
- 1-inch pleated filters: every 30 days
- 4-inch media cabinets: every 90 days
- HEPA units: per manufacturer spec (usually 6–12 months)
